According to the creators of the drug deficiency drug platform in similar situations, medicines can be obtained from other European countries. Legislative changes are needed for this purpose. There can be a fast import in case of drug shortages through parallel imports, so that it can be imported into a different package also.
The possibilities of parallel import to be a solution in the case of drug shortages and a sustainable partner in the drug supply chain were emphasized by Anton Manolev, Quality Assurance Manager at BestaMed at the Drug Regulation Course, organized by the Bulgarian Association for Drug Information. The manager in the largest parallel importer in our country was a representative of the Bulgarian Association for Medicines Parallel Trade Development.

Parallel imports create competition on the drug market with a price effect benefitting patients and a quick solution to overcoming shortages. This became clear at a Round table dedicated to promoting parallel imports in Bulgaria. The event was organized by the Bulgarian Association for Medicines Parallel Trade Development (BAMPTD) under the auspices of the European Association of Euro-pharmaceutical Companies (EAEPC).
182 signals from the whole country were received and processed on Bulgarian Association for Medicines Parallel Trade Development (BAMPTD) internet platform for 3 months. In 53% of the cases, the solution is in import and fast intra-community supplies, as the signals concern deregistered medicines, products with permanent or temporary suspended import in Bulgaria, shows the interim results of BAMPTD drug shortage analysis.
The task force set up by European Union (EU) regulators to better address potential problems with medicines’ supply and to avoid shortages published today its work programme for the coming two years. Improving the availability of human and veterinary medicines authorised in the EU is a key priority of the EU Network1.
